Does a person have to be diagnosed with any particular disabilities to access and receive adult services?
Not necessarily. In New Jersey the Division of Developmental Disabilities, the agency overseeing and serving people with disabilities uses a functional approach in determining ones disability. In other words, what a person can and cannot do in their everyday life is what is primarily considered as opposed to a medical diagnosis.

When can a child with disabilities apply for and/or receive adult services?
Since the eligibility and the application process can take some months to complete, it is always a good idea to apply for services as soon as you become aware of their necessity, even if such is in the future. Applying for services early will ensure that there is no interruption in services upon graduation from your child’s special education program. You may also consider applying for family support and/or respite care while your child is still in school.
